PSHS-BRC grabs gold in Saringaya Awards ‘10 Featured

On its first endeavor to join an environmental competition, the Philippine Science High School – Bicol Region Campus garnered the grand award in this year’s Saringaya Awards (Academe Category), held on June 29, 2010, Casablanca Hotel, Legazpi City.

PSHS-BRC emerged as the grand winner, having defeated Bulusan National High School, Bulusan, Sorsogon, and Bato Elementary School, Catanduanes., based on environmental education program, environmental protection and conservation program, and solid waste management, which consisted half of the total criteria percentage.The integration of the Environmental Science subject in the sophomores’ curriculum, sponsorship of various environmental symposia, operation of the Earth Savers Movement, tree planting activities, adoption of mangrove ecosystem in Nato, Sagnay, maintenance of school nursery, qualified the school for the first and second criteria.Furthermore, the establishment of the garbage disposal sites or compost areas, observance of “Clean as you go” policy and proper segregation of waste reduction of plastic usage, prohibition of Styrofoam usage, observance of recycling and reusing, also contributed to the win.The allotment of environmental-related sections in both Arab-adab and The Bicol Scholar, official school publications of PSHS-BRC in Filipino and English, respectively, and the singing of Panata ng Bayan sa Kalikasan during Flag Rites earned for the school merits.In the pursuit of complying the aforecited indicators, PSHS-BRC got the highest point, according to the Technical Awards Committee. Consequently, the school received two plaques of recognition from the Department of Natural Resources V, sponsor of Saringaya Awards, headed by Regional Executive Director, Joselin Marcus Fragada.During her acceptance speech, PSHS-BRC Campus Director Elsie Ferrer quoted in her speech that this is more than the award. “This is a celebration of a life-changing endeavor, a commitment to preserving the earth which we all share and enjoy and which we hope to still be enjoyed by the next generations to come,” Ferrer said.The institution of environmental programs in the school was spearheaded by Mrs. Ma. Feliciana Benita M. Eloreta and the Earth Savers Movement.Saringaya Awards is an annual competition open to all industries, non-government organizations, local government units, groups and associations, academe and the like, who have supported DENR V.

Saringaya is a Bicol term for abundance of growth, lush and healthy environment teeming with trees and maintains ideal for biodiversity and a well-balanced ecosystem.
