JULLIANE MOIRA SY of the Philippine Science High School – Bicol Region Campus class 2007 was chosen Dangal ng Bayan Awardee for Academic Excellence and Humanitarian Services by the Consumers League of the Philippines Foundation (CONPHIL), Inc.

The distinction was in line with the organization’s 10th Consumer’s Choice and Dangal ng Pilipinas Annual Awards on Nov. 27, 2010 at IRWIN Theater, Ateneo de Manila University, Katipunan Road, Quezon City.

Sy, along with the other awardees, was selected based on the criteria that were set such as: educational background, leadership, professional practice, career growth, valuable service given to consumers, humanitarian services, and other recognitions and commendations received.

In a message sent to The Bicol Scholar, Sy is pleased that her efforts are being acknowledged so early.

“I want to have more experiences back home and this would have been a good one,” Sy said.

Sy added that she is consistent in her propensity to contribute to the Philippines, which she genuinely cares for and for whose situation she wants to better through by applying her experiences.

“I could definitely do a lot more and I am looking forward to the opportunities in the future,” Sy added.

A former editor-in-chief of The Bicol Scholar and three-time contributor to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Sy was the 2007 lone Philippine representative to the United World College in Hongkong where she pioneered a service group that connected the school with the Helpers for Domestic Helpers (HDH), which is a non- profit organization that gives free paralegal advice and counseling to foreign domestic workers.

Adding substance to the merit are her researches for corporate cases and her mentoring young people who committed criminal offenses.

Graduating from this school with With High Honors in 2007 and receiving proficiency awards in English and Journalism – English and the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Academic Excellence, Sy is presently taking up Bachelor of Laws at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom where she has also been extending community services.
