Paller wins EducationUSA Essay Writing Contest

Out of over 300 entries in the 2020 International Education Week (IEW) Essay Writing Contest, Solafedi Estevez Paller of Grade 9- Platinum clinched the first prize on November 30, 2020 with her entry titled “Bioluminescence.”

Sola’s essay talks about hope and strength amid challenges. She said that news on the internet about students who experience anxiety and depression inspired her essay.

“I realized that we need to look after each other because we are living in a different kind of reality. I wanted to express in my essay how a single person who decides to remain hopeful and stay strong can make a tremendous impact on other people’s lives,” she added.

According to Sola, it was her first time to join a writing contest since she is not confident about her writing skills, so when her English 3 teacher sent the link of the said contest in their subject’s group chat she grabbed the opportunity.

“I took the chance to join the contest, because the thought of having a missed opportunity yet once again scared me even more than the thought of failure,” Sola shared.

For winning the first prize Sola gets an iPad, EducationUSA Bag, notebook, pen, and/or USB.

EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State network of over 400 international student advising centers in more than 170 countries.
