Breaking in from the usual dragon boat competitions held on water, the Philippine Science High School – Bicol Region Campus (PSHS-BRC) faculty and staff joined in the Drag-on-Boat race held on land last September 1, 2011 at the school’s auditorium.
Said activity was in line with the 11th Civil Service Anniversary which seeks to honor the people served by the Civil Service Commission (CSC).
Away from their daily routine, the school’s workforce was divided into two groups, A and B, which competed in the games during the said event.
In cited Drag-on-Boat contest, team A won by a 9.8 second-lead from Team B. The race was conducted by three pushers at the back, four paddlers on its sides and a drummer in front.
Aside from Drag-on-Boat, the teams also vied for the basketball and volleyball championships. Team A ended up as victor in both events.
A fun run kicked off the event participated in by the faculty, staff and interested students.
In her opening remarks, Ms. Elsie G. Ferrer, Campus Director, emphasized the significance of responsible and excellent workers for the progress of the nation.
The theme for the undertaking was “Championing R.A.C.E.: Public Service Excellence at Full Speed.”

The Bicol Scholar wins Best Feature Page; 6th Best School Paper
Written by AdministratorThe Bicol Scholar, the official school publication of the Philippine science High School – Bicol Region Campus (PSHS-BRC), grabbed the “Best Feature Page”award and was dubbed as the sixth best school paper in the country during the 2011 National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) held at Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, April 11-15, 2011.
Alongside with the distinction, Mr. Jerry M. Noveno, adviser of said publication, received a trophy and a certificate of recognition.
The Bicol Scholar was included in the Bracket A category in which, publications should be in tabloid size with 16 pages and above.
Said winning feature page depicts the different tourist spots throughout the region.
It could be noted that The Bicol Scholar is the only school paper from Bicol Region to get an award in the national group contest category.

Upon the opening of school year 2011-2012, the Philippine Science High School – Bicol Region Campus’s enrolment increased from 310 to 331, thus rising by 6.8%
Ninety were from the first year wherein all slots were filled in.
Among the 90 freshmen, 62 were principal passers while 28 entrees as alternate passers.
The highest number of entrants was from Camarines Sur with 36; Albay 24; Sorsogon, 14; Camarines Norte, 5; and Masbate, 3.
Other first year students came from provinces outside Bicol like Occidental Mindoro, Quezon Province and Metro Manila.
Among the other students, 90 were from second year with one lateral entrant; 3rd year, 74; and 4th year, 77.
During the orientation held on June 5, 2011, matters on academics, dormitory rules and others were discussed.

Two scholars prevail in monthly finals

After their rousing victory in the weekly finals on Oct. 30, two students from the Philippine Science High School – Bicol Region Campus dominated the monthly finals of the Memo Plus Gold IQ Challenge 2010: The Quest for Bicol’s Best Quizzers at the LCC Mall Activity Center, Naga City, November20.
Said students were Christoper Jan Landicho and Kenneth Anthony Roquid, third- and fourth-year students, respectively, and were coached by Mathematics teacher Mr. Arniel Bare.
The duo posted 31 points to defeat St. Louise de Marillac School of Pili with 23 points and Milaor High School, which had 17 points.
The monthly finals win earned for the duo the chance to compete in the semifinals on February 14, 2011. A semifinal win will bring the team to the grand finals on February 19, 2011.
Started on October 2, the educational quiz show is sponsored by the People’s Broadcasting Network, Inc. (PBN) and Memo Plus Gold.
2 scholars qualify for NSPC 2011; Noveno voted third best school paper adviser of Bicol
Two scholars of the Philippine Science High School – Bicol Region Campus won in their respective events during the Regional Secondary Schools Press Conference (RSSPC) at Marcial O. Rañola Memorial School (MORMS), Guinobatan, Albay, Nov. 9-12, 2010.
Said students were Kendra Ivana Sy, associate editor of The Bicol Scholar, and Ma. Khryster Lee Bellen, news editor, who garnered first place in photojournalism (English) and copy reading and headline writing (English), respectively.
In addition to their feats, Jayson Sime Jeremias placed fourth in copy reading and headline writing (Filipino), while both the English and Filipino radio broadcasting teams of the school were fourth runners-up.
Class 2007 alumna is 2010 Dangal ng Bayan awardee

JULLIANE MOIRA SY of the Philippine Science High School – Bicol Region Campus class 2007 was chosen Dangal ng Bayan Awardee for Academic Excellence and Humanitarian Services by the Consumers League of the Philippines Foundation (CONPHIL), Inc.
The distinction was in line with the organization’s 10th Consumer’s Choice and Dangal ng Pilipinas Annual Awards on Nov. 27, 2010 at IRWIN Theater, Ateneo de Manila University, Katipunan Road, Quezon City.
Sy, along with the other awardees, was selected based on the criteria that were set such as: educational background, leadership, professional practice, career growth, valuable service given to consumers, humanitarian services, and other recognitions and commendations received.
Freshman leads Pisay-Bicol UP Harong Acad Fest winners

VINCE VITTORIO TURIANO of I-Diamond topped the public speaking event in this year’s University of the Philippines (UP) Harong Academic Festival on October 27-30, 2010 at the Ateneo de Naga University, Naga City.
Turiano dominated the said event with his impromptu speech on the role of the government in preserving the environment.

A SENIOR AND A JUNIOR STUDENT FROM THE PHILIPPINE SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL – Bicol Region Campus (PSHS-BRC) were among the members of the Philippine team that competed in the 4th International Olympiad in Astronomy held on Sept. 12-21, 2010 in Beijing, China.
Said students were Kenneth Anthony Roquid, fourth year, and Christoper Jan Landicho, third year student.

Phase one of PSHS-BRC gymnasium ready for use

THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PHILIPPINE SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL—BICOL REGION Campus Gymnasium has just been completed, Mrs. Eden Oliver, school’s administrative officer reported on October 26, 2010.
The construction of the gymnasium, which is located beside the Girls’ Dormitory, began in February this year and was supervised by Mr. Jose Chito Milante.
Pisay-Bicol grabs second championship trophy

THE PHILIPPINE SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL – BICOL REGION CAMPUS RETAINED THE overall championship in the 2010 Division Secondary Schools Press Conference at Quipayo High School, Calabanga, Camarines Sur on October 12-13, 2010.
The school’s winners included the English and Filipino radio broadcasting and news scripting teams, which both garnered first place. The English team’s members were Patrick Leo Rebato, Daniel Oliver Tondo, Jan Mae Tresvalles, Vanessa Gail Borja, Abigail Abragan, Jorriel Balbedina, and Czarina Nicole Macatingrao.
