Scholars, Raymond Francis Dorutheo San Antonio and Lorraine Faye Sarmiento won the second place in the 2nd Biotechnology Quiz held at the Gateway Mall on November 29, 2012. The said contest was held in celebration of National Biotechnology Week.
Forty-three (43) high schools were competing in the first elimination round where seven PSHS campuses were included. In this round, San Antonio and Sarmiento gained 86 points making them the top scorer. Ten finalists faced off for the second round where the UP Rural High School got the 1st place with a cash prize of P35,000; PSHS-BRC landed in 2nd place with P30,000 cash and PSHS-CMC as 3rd place with P20,000.
The campus’ representatives were coached by Ms. Ma. Feliciana Benita M. Eloreta and Ms. Jona Lou L. Mesia.
The said event was sponsored by the department of Agriculture BIOTECH Program Implementation Unit, The Philippine Academy of Microbiology, National Institute for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB-Diliman and Los Banos) and the Filipino Teachers Realizing the Importance of Biotechnology Education (FILTRIBE).

PROJECT PROFILE
UPLIFT is a project of the Philippine Science High School System, in partnership with DOST-SEI and DepEd. This is a training institute for 1,530 grade 7 DepEd teachers in three disciplines: Science, Math and English. PSHS-BRC, being one of the nine sites, will cater to 180 trainees (60 for each discipline), for the duration of the program. PSHS-BRC faculty will be tapped as resource persons and facilitators.

PSHS-BRC snags another robotics accolade as two teams topped the Philippine Robotics Olympiad on September 5-7, 2012 at SM City North, Quezon City, earning a spot in the international competition.
Besting 82 other teams were third years comprised of Lourdes Marie Alvina, Vince Buerano and Jennelyn Zapanta. Coming in second were the seniors; Justin Daniel Belmonte, Dennis Roy Ojeda and John Angelo Manaog. These scholars competed in the robo soccer category.
Headed by Mr. Sevedeo J. Malate, the coach, the scholars will compete in the World Robotics Olympiad to be held this November in Malaysia.

Sacrifices and efforts by the PSHS-BRC family prove fruitful as they claim major awards at the Ibalong Festival held on August 29, 2012 in Legazpi City.
Scholars were adjudged champion in costume and props, music and sound, street dance, ritual presentation, and the grand champion award. Ibalong dancers and participants were trained by Mr. Joel Reginales, Mr. Francis Barrio and Mr. Mark del Rosario. The PSU band and Tig-aw beaters also helped in the music and sound.
Students, faculty and staff, parents, alumni and the whole Pisay community have all contributed to the success of the school in the said festival.

To gain more knowledge and skills in Botany and Forestry, the Plant Science elective class of the Philippine Science High School – Bicol Region Campus went on an ecological trip to Consocep Mountain Resort/Falls in Tigaon, Camarines Sur last August 17.
The group was lead by their elective adviser, Ms. Jona Lou L. Mesia, and was accompanied by four other members of the PSHS faculty, Mr. Mark Anthony del Rosario, Mr. Jeavons Pablo Mesia, Mr. Tom Jordan Secundo, and Mr. Chinkee Lim. Seven foresters were also sent by the Camarines Sur Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), headed by Mr. Ariel Tuyay, to serve as the guides and resource speakers of the activity.
The group left at around 7 in the morning for the 45 minute drive from Goa to the entrance of the site. The main area was reached through trekking the 1350-step trail.
After arriving in the area, Ms. Mesia started the program with a word of thanks a talk from Mr. Tuyay regarding the Mt. Isarog National Park, followed by the awarding of the certificates of appreciation to the foresters. Then, the group went trekking, visiting the three falls within the vicinity of the resort.
The first was the “Kawa-kawa” falls, found at the main area, and named for its shape which resembles a kawali or frying pan. The next destination was the “Bulalakaw” falls. It was called “Bulalakaw”, meaning a “shooting star”, because of the impact and rapid fall of its water. Last but not the least was the “Tumaguite” falls, a tourist favorite because of its view. “Tumaguite” means “drizzle”, implying that the water coming from the falls are like droplets of rain.
The foresters took samples of notable specimens found around the area and took down notes for the lecture later on.
Subsequently, the team took lunch, and the students and teachers were given time to swim and explore the “Kawa-kawa” falls further. Afterwards, the Mr. Francis Florece, CENRO forester, conducted a lecture on the specimens collected.
11 leaves were identified using their local names: the Alawihao, White Lawaan, Red Lawaan, Pipi, Bayag-usa, Pulp wood, Mala-santol, Takip-asim, Antaon, Agislaw, and Utuay. Two barks were also taken and identified as the Amugis and the Saramisin.
Besides the identification of the specimen, the foresters explained the laws and programs protecting Mt. Isarog, including PNoy’s 6-year National Greening Program (NGP). The Plant Science class aims to help in this program which aims to add more of the local species to the vegetation of Mt. Isarog.
The restoration soon followed, and the group left the resort at around three in the afternoon.

Scholars bring home the bacon after competing in the annual grand street presentation as part of the Ylau Raya Festival on August 10, 2012 in Tigaon, Camarines Sur.
Dancers of the school showed off in the street presentation that celebrated the Ibalong theme. The school won first runner up which also counts as second in best choreography and also won the best costume award.
Said presentation was conceptualized by Mr. Joel Reginales with the help of Mr. Francis Bario, Mr. Mark del Rosario and Mr. jay Bassig who trained the instrumentalists.

PSHS-BRC ended July 2012 with a bang, owing to the Nutrition Day Celebration held on the 30th propelled by the theme, “Pagkain ng Gulay ugaliin, araw-araw ihain”. The scholars busied themselves with the events of the day.
The activities were kicked off with an exercise routine led by the fourth years, followed by the simultaneous preparations for the cook fest, jingle contest, table preparation contest. After the presentations, five representatives from each section participated in the vegetable planting activity. Mr. Chinkee Lim, a faculty, gave a symposium and presentation prior to the awarding ceremony.
Awarding of the winners concluded the one day celebration.

Aiming to promote environmental awareness among students and school personnel, Arbor Day was celebrated last June 22 in the Philippine Science High School – Bicol Region Campus in Goa, Camarines Sur.
Headed by Dr. Miguel M. Lavadia, the Earth Savers club adviser with Ms. Maria Feliciana Benita M. Eloreta, selected members of the Earth Savers club and some advisers, participated in the tree planting activity conducted that day.
Immediately after classes, the students involved were oriented by Ms. Eloreta and Hanna Joy M. Cababan, president of the Earth Savers club. They proceeded to the tree planting areas after being given the instructions.
The tree planting spots were located at the back of the Academic Building 2, the right side of the Auditorium, and the front / side of the Girls’ Dormitory. They were assisted by the school’s utility personnel.
To avoid consuming too much time, the utility personnel already dug holes and prepared the tree seedlings for the students to place in the ground. Then, the students started planting as soon as they arrived at the areas.
The plants were provided by the graduates of Batch 2012. Members of the II-Ilang-ilang class brought pails and were tasked to water the plants every Wednesday afternoon.
The Earth Savers club members hope to have more environmental activities this year in order to help promote stewardship to Mother Earth.
