NCE caravan kicks off

NCE Caravan

To lure more grade six students to take the Philippine Science High School National Competitive Examination, selected faculty members started on June 26 what is termed NCE caravan or school-to-school promotion of the NCE.

Values Education teacher Armin Apostol distributed NCE application forms to selected elementary and central schools in Partido on June 26 and Rinconada area on June 27.

The Camarines Norte caravan on June 28 was spearheaded by English teacher Jerry Noveno and research teacher Ferly Lovete, who went to as far as Vinzons town for said purpose.

Next week Apostol and Noveno will visit various schools in Albay, which have been feeders of scholars in the campus.

Based on the schedule, the NCE caravan will also go to the first to third districts of Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, and the island provinces of Masbate and Catanduanes.

The NCE caravan is a month-long undertaking designed to invite more grade six pupils to take the NCE and make schools aware of the existence of a PSHS campus here in Goa, Camarines Sur.

Filled-out NCE application forms must be submitted on or before August 2 at the campus or provincial DOST offices.

This year’s NCE is scheduled on Sept. 28 in seven testing centers across the region.

Independence Day 2013

The faculty & staff and selected students joined in the celebration of the 115th Independence Day of the Republic of the Philippines today.

Led by no less than Campus Director Elsie Ferrer, the group joined in the parade that started at the Partido State University grounds and ended at the Goa Sports Complex.

With the school’s employees were selected third- and fourth-year students who carried with them drum sets to provide music during the parade.

Following the parade was a program which was keynoted by Camarines Sur’s Schools Division Superintendent Gilbert Sadsad who briefly explained the features of the K-12 curriculum that has recently been signed into law by President Benigno Aquino III.

Sadsad also stressed on freedom and independence not being absolute and encouraged the crowd to get rid of selfish interests and intentions that continue to “imprison” the Filipinos.

Alongside the Independence Day celebration, the Orgulyo Kan Goa Festival was also officially launched, culminating on the town fiesta on June24.

Ninety-two new students were welcomed to the Philippine Science High School–Bicol Region Campus family during yesterday’s Orientation Program at the school’s auditorium.

This number consists of 90 grade 7 students and two lateral grade 8 student-transferees from the Naga City Science High School.

In her message, Campus Director Elsie Ferrer told the new scholars and their parents of the laborious struggles of the school from the year it was established to where it is now. She assured the parents that their children are in good hands and will be nurtured through a special science curriculum designed to shape them into becoming scientists and engineers.

Ferrer also stressed the importance of parental support to the scholars given the demanding curriculum, which is commensurate to the Department of Education’s K-12 education program, though Phil Sci graduates, she added, are expected to be in the university level once they finished their secondary education.

Following her message was the introduction of the faculty and non-teaching staff by Administrative Officer Eden Oliver for the Finance and Administrative Division personnel, Students Services Division Chief Jay Bassig for the library, dormitory, guidance, and registrar personnel, and Curriculum and Instruction Services Division Chief Arnel Bermejo for the faculty.

GPTA President and Camarines Sur Schools Division Superintendent Gilbert Sadsad delivered a testimony on the parents’ behalf, in which he described the life of being a parent of a Phil Sci student. Sadsad encouraged the parents of the new students to never lose contact time with their children especially since most of them are going to stay in the dormitory.

To lighten the program, registrar-designate Fe Balang rendered a song number that encapsulates what Phil Sci scholars can do and will be able to do in the process.

Based on the records given by Balang, the grade seven population by place of origin is as follows: Camarines Sur with 41 students; Albay, 31; Catanduanes 5, Masbate, 4; Quezon, 4; Camarines Norte, 3; and Sorsogon and Laguna both with 1.

The 92 new students are part of the total enrollment of 360.

Classes officially begin today, June 10.

2nd PSHS-BRC Science Fair

‘Stay curious’ – Tolod to young researchers

“I want you to stay curious.”

Thus said by Engr. Kristine R. Tolod who was the plenary speaker during the 2nd Philippine Science High School – Bicol Region Campus (PSHS – BRC) Science Fair held last March 15, 2013.

“Recognize that there will always be constraints and it is important that you befriend your research environment,” Tolod stated as she recalled the hardships she has encountered while she was still performing research in PSHS-BRC and how hard it has been to finish the study with limited equipment and facilities.

Now working as a petrochemical specialist in Petron, Tolod also reminded the budding researchers to go with good people “who can always create better ideas” despite challenges that they may encounter along the way.

She reminisced how she and her groupmates, which she considered as the “good people”, were able to accomplish their study, which eventually brought them to the international renewable energy conference in Yokohama, Japan.

“There are no shortcuts in achieving real growth and maturity as a researcher, “she added as she talked about the challenges she has survived while working on her study abroad alone.

“We should channel our efforts to solve the problems of the Philippines because this is where we live,” she finally stressed.
